Monday night saw the final rehearsal of Romeo & Juliet before we begin techs and dresses the following Monday (27th February.) We only managed one run through but it was great to see how much the show had improved since we all last saw it, and the cast are still working hard on making it bigger and more entertaining for the audience. The Shakespearean (I think that's a word...) language has also been engraved into our brains are we now do the whole show as if it were our first language. I know there were a lot of people - including me - who were worried about making the dialogue in the show sound convincing, not just as if it was recited over and over again but one of the main things Dan made sure in rehearsals was that we understood each and every word we were saying, why we were saying it and how it could be said. It may have seen tedious at the time in rehearsals when it would take Dan about 20 minutes to find out the meaning of one word but it paid off in the end.

So now after our short and intense rehearsal period we're sailing into production week. Carl Davies - our brilliant designer - has sorted out all our costumes and set design for the show. Undoubtedly, it looks great! I'm particularly fond of the Montague's outfits and fashion sense that they have (ironic since I'm playing a Capulet.)

Despite the fact we have a number of long techs to get through at the beginning of the week, there's definitely an excited atmosphere around the cast and crew to just do the show already. But of course...health & safety first!

Through techs, I'm also hoping to get some pictures of what actually happens behind the scenes; in the wings before going on the stage, in the dressing rooms and warm ups. So keep an eye out for them!

If you've been reading through this and decided you are interested in seeing Romeo & Juliet at The Berry Theatre, make sure you book your tickets quickly before they're all gone!

15 days left...

It's exactly 15 days left until Romeo & Juliet opening night at The Berry Theatre in Hedge End. We have 8 more rehearsals left, which include our tech and dress rehearsals. Crazy! Because of this, this half term is dedicated to 10 hour rehearsals per day.

On Monday, we blocked in the transitions between scenes and concentrated on some more detail. From a cast members point of view, it was nice to see how the show has progressed since last seeing (or more like hearing it) at the read through. And so far, it's progressed really well because of the hard work being put in. The next few days are being concentrated on one Act per day, picking at the tiny detail that complete the scene. Today we looked at the Act One. It didn't feel like a 10 hour rehearsal because of the intense focus needed as there's no time to waste. It may sound tiring  repeating the same thing over and over again, but when with such short time we have no other choice. It does also pay off, from this morning to this evening there was a huge leap in progress. I think I speak on behalf of the cast when I say that the scenes, characters and character relationships are improving greatly.

The rest of the week will contain the same process, which is actually very exciting knowing that at the end of the week and at the beginning of next week we'll be able to start full run throughs.

Our PYT are also sounding better and better each time. Their version of One Direction's 'What makes you beautiful' is probably better than the original!

If you haven't got your tickets yet, I suggest you book! In an honest non-biased opinion, this is going to be one of the Point Youth Theatre's best shows to date.
